When Holidays Go Wrong

We are all getting more adventurous - not only in the distances we are prepared to travel, but in the activities we indulge in once we get to our holiday destinations. Lying on a beach with a good book seems so pass when you can go bungee jumping, galloping a horse down a beach, skiing or paragliding. But with excitement comes danger, especially if you dont ensure youre sufficiently covered by your travel insurance.

American Express Travel Insurance recently issued a warning, stating that not all skiing-trip travel insurance will cover inexperienced skiers who go off-piste (even if accompanied by a guide). This has become a particular concern following an unusually mild winter with low snowfall across Europe. Many holidaymakers risked going off-piste to find the best snowfall, resulting in twice as many accidents in the French Alps compared to the year before. If you are thinking of going skiing in the next year, it is essential that you check your insurance policy before you leave - you could be liable for huge costs if you have an accident off-piste and you discover your policy does not cover you. Airlifting you from the French Alps, for instance, could cost as much as 2,000. Quite simply, you need to tell your insurers if you are planning any kind of activity that could put you at greater risk of injury.

According to recent research, 15% of British people risk going abroad without any kind of travel insurance, let alone brutal anal sports cover. Consider some of the costs you might incur should you fall ill or have an accident abroad, and you might think twice before gambling with your health and finances. Even if you holiday in Europe where your medical treatment might be covered by a European Health Insurance Card, you may still have to cover the costs of getting home to the UK, following your accident.

Examples of typical medical costs abroad:

  • Air ambulance (East cost USA) - 30,000-35,000
  • Air ambulance (Canaries) - 12,000-16,000
  • Scheduled flight, stretcher and doctor escort (Australia) - 15,000-20,000
  • Scheduled flight, seated economy with a doctor escort (Mediterranean) - 1,800-4,000
Source: health and wellbeing provider, First Assist Tales of woe, however, shouldnt put you off travelling far and wide, and enjoying all the activities on offer once you get there. The following guide provides some tips on how you can holiday, while gaining the best travel insurance at the best price for what you would like to do abroad:

  1. If you are going to do anything that will be seen as risky such as skiing, canoeing, scuba-diving or climbing - you must tell your insurers and ensure your policy covers you in the event of an accident. Some activities such as paragliding or ski jumping may require special policies.
  2. Do not skimp on your travel insurance. If the worst happens and you are injured abroad, you will want to know that you have the right insurance policy and company behind you to make the best of a bad situation. Check that the policy covers everything you need and choose one with a 24-hr international helpline.
  3. Beyond your potential holiday activities, make sure your travel insurance covers other basic essentials, such as medical and dental treatment, getting you back home, personal liability, missed departure, cancelled flights, theft and lost luggage.
  4. Shop around for the best deal. Dont just assume that your travel agent is the best option for travel insurance - look at the different insurance options and choose one that works for you both financially and practically.
  5. Ensure you take all your travel insurance documents with you. If you need to make a claim, you will need all your details close at hand.

One final piece of advice: once you have your travel insurance secured, try and forget about the potential dangers and enjoy your break. After all, holidays are really meant to be about having fun...

The Virtue Purity Disappeared About the Same Time as Religion Declined

One of the reasons for my writing about virtues these past few months has been due to a strong inner feeling that if humans could slow down long enough to honestly examine how we treat each other, and to use a virtuous philosophy to live by, we would be far better off.

Several thousand years ago when the Greek's were the dominant force in the known world, they instituted a unique democratic form of government, vigorously studied math, the sciences and philosophy, and lived lives based on virtues.

When the three major world religions emerged in the centuries that followed virtues were replaced with similar, yet different ways, to live our lives. As more time passed and religion in Europe and America declined in popularity, a more secular view dominated thinking and philosophy, thinking that is more liberal in its basis.

As I have mentioned in this column, it is in this increasing liberal view that we have thrown religion out of many places where had it added a more virtuous tilt to our thinking. Spirituality or religion doesnt occupy a place our schools, government or private lives as it once did.

The obvious question is: Are we better off without it?

Now, even our entertainment industry pushes violence, sex, poor language and hatred as main topics for movies, music and television and the censors who are supposed to maintain certain dignity and quality look the other way.

I was listening to the national talk show host Hugh Hewitt last weekend and at the end of his show he played a recording of President Roosevelt during the days after the Normandy invasion of World War II. The President extolled the virtues of patience of the war effort and diligence in purchasing war bonds.

At the end, he asked the listening American audience to bow their collective heads and pray with him. He asked God for guidance, safety for the troops, success in the war effort and for steadfastness in the purity of resolve of the American people.

Can you imagine President Bush doing the same today? There would be an instantaneous outcry from the secular side of the isle asking for an immediate investigation by a committee to seek impeachment on the grounds of separation of church and state.

By now, you are probably asking what does this all have to do with my title virtue, purity. Well, I opened with the thought: if humans could slow down long enough to honestly examine how we treat each other, and to use a virtuous philosophy to live by, we would be far better off.

Purity is a strange, largely unused word that conjures thoughts of the first Americans, the Puritans with their ever-so-strict lifestyle. Obviously, Im not talking about that kind of extreme change.

Purity is defined in Websters as: a quality or state of being pure. Pure is defined as: free from roughness or harshness. These two definitions are what Im driving at. If you put the two together it comes out: A quality or state of being pure without roughness and harshness.

In the past couple of months I spoke of gentleness and politeness, and how they allow us to work together peacefully and amicably. Purity falls into this category too. The Greeks who followed these philosophies were obviously looking for an educated life of peace and tranquility.

These types of virtues can easily be taught and followed by parents and children. School PTAs can adopt this line of thinking for its teachers, communities can institute virtues into public policy and change will begin.

Purity is a foundation virtue. Once it has been examined, adopted and put into use in your life you will see profound changes in how you view others. You will treat those you come in contact with differently, with understanding and compassion, not selfishly or with hatred and mistrust.

You will also see a difference in your choices; what you will allow in your life and what you will accept will change. Following a virtuous lifestyle is no different that those who follow a philosophy of Tai Chi, Yoga, or meditation. It is disciplined, easily followed and once you know and understand the parameters you can teach your children.

Children need discipline early in life to establish good ethics surrounding work, love, drugs, and honesty. With those fundamental disciplines in place, those often-difficult teen years will be easier on everyone.

Yes, these philosophies are old and overlooked today, but is that a reason to ignore the wonderful results that they produced in the past?

In the end, its just one mans opinion, mine.

DMC Stands For Devastating Mic Control

The King Of Rock

It was 1985, just six short years removed from the incident known as Disco Demolition Night in Chicago where a frenzied crowd of thousands gathered in Comiskey Park with hate in their eyes and hearts. The abhorrent mob assembled for the sole purpose of sealing the fate of the long standing disco movement by setting their albums and cassettes of the music on fire en masse. It was a revolt in the truest sense, unlike any negative display towards a particular style of music before. This was not simple a slip in the charts; it was an execution.

Disco was dead.

The era of heavy metal had truly begun. The Bee Gees, now the official former kings of the airwaves, would be Stayin Alive no longer. Their bass lines and high pitched vocal stylings were ablaze in a fiery Disco Inferno that an all too happy slew of long haired rockers was throwing gasoline upon.

It wasnt Kung Fu Fighting. No. The war between disco and rock that raged from the mid seventies throughout the mid eighties was finally over. Rock prevailed and claimed the throne at the top of the mountain, its sole challenger vanquished.

Who else dare challenge the king?

Jazz? Please
Blues? Come again?
Country? Are you serious?

How about rap? Rap? Whats rap?

Rap was still very much a new and relatively unknown commodity, largely ignored by the mainstream audience, critics, and radio stations. Most of the rising form of musics sales could not even be tracked with any accuracy since most of the artists were selling their material out of the trunks of their cars, unable to secure a record deal.

Distributors stared blank eyed at rappers as they listened to demos. The supposed professionals didnt have the vision to see and understand the music that would eventually launch a revolution. Backed into a corner, the only way to move forward was apparent.

A few courageous entrepreneurs started their own rap labels. One was known as Sugarhill Records. It received modest distribution and was the label that released what has been called by many The first real rap song. Rappers Delight, by the Sugarhill Gang, was the best received rap single up to that point by far.

Looking back, some define the moment as the official start of rap music being that the classic single received airplay, reached number thirty eight on the music charts, and was available in many stores. The Sugarhill Gang was knocking on the door to legitimate entry into the music world, but a twenty something rapper known simply as DMC was not content with banging his knuckles against the door. He had his hand wrapped around the doorknob and was twisting it open.

There would be no knocking for Darryl Mcdaniels who, along with fellow rapper Joseph Run Simmons, and DJ Jam Master Jay, released the self titled Run DMC album in the spring of 1984 on Profile Records.

It seemed like no one knew what to make of it. Run DMC was nothing like anything or anyone before them. The group of three black men from Hollis Queens defied any and all classification. They werent rock, though they had electric guitar in some of their songs. They werent disco.

What are they? What style of music is Run DMC?

Theyre rap.

Oh, rap. I think I heard of that.

The trio was slowly gaining an audience, catching on with their catchy combination of back and forth rhyming between Run and DMC laid over the skillful record scratching and 808 drum machine beats of Jay. Throw in a few samples and an occasional guitar riff and you had a fresh new sound that cried out to be listened to.

Run DMC would not be denied, nor could that historic first release which has sold well over three million units. Things didnt explode yet for Run DMC, but that was just a matter of time.

The door was cracked open, but rap music still just a foot inside. Rock music was still looking down the mountain, unworried, at rap music and laughing. The reigning king felt no threat. There could be no challenge to the throne unless someone from the rap world was ready to step up big time.

Enter DMC stage left.

Fade In:
Slavery may have been abolished in 1862 and there was a supposed equality among the races that was talked about, but a quick glance of the music charts was all that was needed to show the flagrant divided still present. White artists dominated the airwaves. The number of black rock groups was minimal and the number of them that hit the charts was close to nonexistent.

Run DMC eventually changed the face of the music world and helped to bridge the gap of racism by promoting racial equality - not favoritism in either direction - and becoming celebrities in an era that embraced the exact opposite of what they embodied. Forget rock. Forget rap.

Run DMC transcended musical style and classification and in doing so changed the look of music world in one defining moment when Darryl Mcdaniels summoned up enough testicular fortitude for the entire rap community and performed an act that held with it the ramifications of painting a bulls eye on his back. He easily risked being a dead man.

It seemed like suicide.

During a year when sales of rock music to a predominantly Caucasian audience were in the millions, Run DMC released their sophomore album. The title track features a confident DMC spewing five words, without the accompaniment of music, which changed the musical scenario forever.

The young man who went on to inspire so many to come after him made an undeniably thought provoking statement when he rapped five simple words acapella into a microphone so many years ago.

In the world of politics and government, it was Martin Luther King with the famous words, I have a dream.

The world of music has its equivalent and the quote belongs to Darryl Mcdaniels. His five words, just as powerfully as Kings four, continue to inspire as they reach a whole new audience. No one can forget the first time they heard DMC utter the last words anyone ever expected to hear from a black mans mouth.

Im the king of rock!
Darryl Mcdaniels was a legend.

The statement was so powerful; it was used to name the album and was largely responsible for the eventual platinum status.

DMC kept up the theme with his next lyric, There is none higher, just in case someone missed the fact that he was indeed the king of rock and the blazing electric guitar that pulsed throughout the track and the album which can only be described as a groundbreaking masterpiece - was not enough to persuade them.

Rock music was on the ropes; it needed to perform a rope a dope if it wanted to survive. It got its help from a most unlikely source. Rather than pick a fight, Run DMC continued their merging of rock and rap by extending the olive branch to a group of fallen from grace rockers whose best days were well behind them buried in the seventies. Aerosmith produced some lackluster records since and hadnt had a hit in nearly a decade.

Mcdaniels and his cohorts joined forces with the struggling rockers and went on to record a classic remake of one of Aerosmiths old hits. Walk This Way was an even bigger seller the second time around and helped to catapult Run DMCs third release, Raising Hell, into international multi platinum sales.

Run DMC didnt appear to be battling with rock for musical supremacy, but if anyone was keeping score; it was clear to see who indeed the king was.

Its been quite a roller coaster ride for the young men who made Adidas a phenomenon. Since Raising Hells release over twenty years ago the superstars have put out four more albums all of which have achieved platinum status.

Unfortunately the trio was reduced to two on October 30th. 2002 when the legendary Jam Master Jay was called to his maker. Joseph Run Simmons is now known as Reverend Run. The new man of the cloth, when not filming his hit reality TV show, still finds time to rock the microphone with his often imitated but never duplicated emceeing skills. His solo release Distortion served to fill many fans desire for a new Run DMC recording.

DMC, years removed from his days at St. Johns university, is set to match his partner in crime and will even be featuring the Reverend on a few tracks of the King Of Rocks solo debut Checks, Thugs, & Rock -N- Roll.
